A Blow to Trump’s Legacy: The Nobel Prize He Craved Remains Elusive

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize will be recorded as a significant blow to the legacy Donald Trump has sought to build as a global peacemaker. The prize, which he openly craved, remains elusive after the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded it to Venezuelan activist María Corina Machado.
For Trump, the Nobel would have been the ultimate validation of his unconventional foreign policy. It would have served as a powerful counter-argument to critics who decried his “America First” approach, proving that his methods, however disruptive, produced peace.
Instead, the committee honored Machado, a figure who represents the very ideals of international cooperation and human rights that Trump’s critics accuse him of undermining. Her selection for unifying Venezuela’s opposition was a celebration of patient, principled, and collaborative work.
The White House’s swift and defiant reaction revealed the depth of the disappointment. By immediately vowing that Trump would “continue making peace deals,” the administration signaled that the quest for this kind of validation is not over.
While Trump’s supporters will argue his achievements stand on their own, the absence of a Nobel Peace Prize will remain a conspicuous gap in his record. It is a powerful symbol that, in the eyes of the committee, his brand of deal-making did not meet the standard for the world’s most prestigious honor for peace.
