“Join hands rather than letting go” was the central message from Chinese President Xi Jinping to APEC leaders in Gyeongju, South Korea. His speech on Friday came on the heels of a major one-year trade deal with US President Donald Trump.
Xi’s address warned against “breaking supply chains” and called for “genuine multilateralism.” He urged nations to “actively seek more points of convergence of interests” to ensure global economic stability.
The deal with Trump, which Xi said provides “peace of mind,” involves the US slashing some tariffs and export controls. This move signals a significant de-escalation in the trade dispute.
In exchange for the tariff relief, China agreed to buy US soybeans and to pause any new restrictions on the export of critical rare earth minerals.
The US also made a key concession, agreeing to postpone a restrictive technology measure for one year. Both leaders praised the meeting, with Trump calling it “amazing” and announcing an April visit to China.
