Singapore and Sweden have committed to enhancing their partnership in advanced technologies while sharing strategies on social cohesion and economic competitiveness. This initiative was announced by Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam during his state visit to Sweden, which also marked the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
The collaboration will focus on several cutting-edge sectors, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, the Internet of Things, and the development of 5G and 6G applications. A pivotal outcome of the visit was the agreement on a joint declaration for strategic cooperation in trusted and innovative technologies.
President Tharman underscored the mutual benefits that could arise from learning about each other’s economic growth models. He praised Sweden’s commitment to social equality alongside a thriving entrepreneurial scene, highlighting its robust start-up ecosystem supported by a network of investors and business mentors. This model is seen as offering valuable insights for Singapore as it seeks to bolster start-up funding and innovation.
The discussions also touched on the role of predictable regulations and support for international business expansion in helping companies remain competitive without direct intervention in their strategies. The leaders stressed the importance of collaboration between employers and trade unions, especially in workforce training and adapting to industry changes, ensuring economic transformation benefits workers.
During his visit, Tharman explored potential collaborations with prominent Swedish companies such as Spotify, Ericsson, and Volvo, reflecting a shared interest in deepening business and technological ties. The bilateral relationship, which has grown over six decades from defense technology to include research, education, and energy, aims to strengthen innovation and competitiveness in a challenging global landscape.
