Zaqy Mohamad, recently appointed as Singapore’s Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, has committed to maintaining strong engagement with the Muslim community to better address its needs. His appointment follows the resignation of Faishal Ibrahim, who exited his political role, Parliament, and the People’s Action Party on July 20. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong cited a lapse in judgment concerning Faishal’s interactions with a female member of the public as the reason for his resignation.
In his new role, Zaqy emphasized his intention to collaborate closely with the M3+ network, volunteers, and community partners. This collaboration aims to enhance the programs designed to support and uplift the Malay-Muslim community in Singapore. “There is a lot of important work ahead of us, and we must continue building on the progress our community has made,” Zaqy stated, assuring that the community would continue to receive dedicated support.
Reflecting on Faishal’s departure, Zaqy expressed his sadness, highlighting their nearly two-decade-long working relationship. Faishal’s resignation has sparked reactions from several Malay-Muslim lawmakers and community leaders, who have voiced disappointment over the circumstances.
