Singapore and Germany Enhance Partnership in Industrial AI and Emerging Tech

Singapore and Germany have unveiled plans to enhance their collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies, marking a significant development in their strategic partnership. This announcement came after a meeting between Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on October 27. The updated roadmap builds on a 2024 plan, focusing on industrial AI, digital economy, advanced manufacturing, and other technological innovations.

Both leaders emphasized the transformative potential of AI in improving productivity and creating new opportunities for businesses and workers. They aim to expand the use of industrial AI in manufacturing, robotics, and logistics, while also prioritizing AI safety and security to ensure responsible deployment.

The collaboration will extend to research initiatives during the Singapore-Germany Year of Innovation, with joint projects spanning AI, semiconductors, quantum technology, space, green technologies, and advanced manufacturing. This effort seeks to leverage existing academic and research partnerships to accelerate innovation.

In addition to technological cooperation, Singapore and Germany plan to bolster economic ties between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union. Singapore will work with Germany during its 2027 ASEAN chairmanship to advance regional cooperation, including the pursuit of an ASEAN-EU free trade agreement and enhanced integration of digital systems.

The leaders also explored regional energy connectivity and the protection of critical underwater infrastructure, such as subsea cables and pipelines. Germany’s support for Singapore’s voluntary initiative on underwater infrastructure protection underscores their shared commitment to international law and multilateral cooperation.
