Boeing 737 Max: Advanced Tech Mandates Fuselage Crack Inspections

The Federal Aviation Administration has instructed operators of the Boeing 737 Max to conduct thorough inspections for potential cracks in a crucial fuselage component. This directive, affecting an estimated 471 aircraft, is set to commence in September. The inspections are concentrated on the bear strap, a structural component that reinforces the fuselage around the exit doors. This follows the discovery of similar cracks in older Boeing 737 Next Generation models, which necessitated inspections of those aircraft.

While no cracks have been detected in the 737 Max fleet yet, the FAA highlighted that the aircraft shares a similar design and manufacturing process with its predecessor, suggesting a possibility of the same issue arising. The agency cautioned that undetected cracks could compromise the structural integrity of the aircraft by weakening key components.

Boeing has been proactively addressing this concern with airlines since first identifying it in 2019, expressing support for the mandated inspections. The company stated that these checks aim to detect and rectify any issues before they escalate to critical levels, ensuring that safety remains paramount.

This development adds to the ongoing scrutiny faced by the 737 Max, a model that has already been under intense examination due to past safety incidents. The aircraft was temporarily grounded worldwide after two tragic crashes in 2018 and 2019, which raised questions about its manufacturing and engineering quality.
