Wong addressed the role of remuneration in drawing qualified candidates to politics, acknowledging it as a significant factor while underscoring that public service should fundamentally be a vocation. He cautioned against the deterrent effect that excessive personal and financial sacrifices might have on potential candidates, suggesting it could dissuade capable individuals from pursuing political careers.
The government has endorsed recommendations from a long-overdue review concerning the salaries of political office holders and Members of Parliament. Wong explained that these adjustments are crucial to ensuring that compensation for political leaders does not lag behind evolving realities. He noted that inadequate political leadership could, over time, undermine the quality of the civil service. Talented public officers, he argued, need leaders they respect and can learn from; without this, they might be less inclined to tackle challenging responsibilities or might even opt to leave.
While discussing the selection of ministers, Wong stressed that character remains the paramount criterion. He stated that individuals lacking integrity, values, and a commitment to public service should not be entrusted with ministerial roles, irrespective of their capabilities.
