Japan, ASEAN Enhance Tech Collaboration in Economic Partnership Agreement

Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are set to explore new dimensions in their economic partnership, a move that could bolster supply-chain resilience, enhance energy security, and integrate advanced artificial intelligence technologies across the region. This initiative comes as the global economy faces mounting challenges from disrupted supply chains and geopolitical tensions.

During a recent meeting in Manila on September 20, economic ministers from Japan and ASEAN agreed to study updates to their existing partnership agreement, which first came into effect in 2008. The focus will be on adapting to the evolving economic landscape, particularly in response to risks threatening global supply chains and the transformative impact of AI in various sectors.

Japan emphasized its commitment to supporting energy security within the ASEAN region. This includes strengthening oil stockpiles to ensure stable energy supplies, especially in light of disruptions to key routes in the Middle East. Such measures are crucial as the region seeks to mitigate vulnerabilities and enhance its energy infrastructure.

The ministers underscored the importance of closer economic cooperation amid the current global trade uncertainties. The existing Japan-ASEAN economic partnership has already facilitated significant economic exchanges, with two-way merchandise trade amounting to $245.4 billion in 2025. Japanese investment in ASEAN also reached $9.5 billion, highlighting the economic interdependence between these regions.

As Japan and ASEAN prepare to update their agreement, the focus will be on strengthening collaborative efforts to address contemporary economic challenges. This strategic move aims to create a more resilient and interconnected economic framework that can effectively respond to future disruptions and opportunities.
