The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has marked a significant milestone in its naval modernization initiative with the launch of its second Multi-Role Combat Vessel (MRCV), named Valour. This event comes just nine months after the launch of its predecessor, Victory, showcasing the country’s continued advancements in enhancing its maritime capabilities. The launch ceremony, which took place at Benoi Shipyard, highlighted the accelerated production timeline achieved by ST Engineering, with CEO Vincent Chong attributing this efficiency to lessons learned during the construction of the first vessel. As a result, Valour was completed three months ahead of schedule, and further gains in production efficiency are anticipated for the remaining ships in the series.
These cutting-edge MRCVs are set to replace the older Victory-class missile corvettes. They boast advanced features that enable integration with various unmanned systems, making them adept at executing a wide range of missions. The fleet, which will include the vessels Victory, Valour, Vigilance, Valiant, Vigour, and Vengeance, is slated for delivery starting in 2028. At the launch event, K. Shanmugam, Coordinating Minister for National Security, underscored the strategic importance of these vessels in securing Singapore’s maritime interests, especially amid rising global tensions and potential disruptions in critical sea lanes like the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized that the MRCVs are capable of covering an operational range of approximately 7,000 nautical miles and can remain at sea for over 21 days without resupply.
Construction is already underway for the third and fourth vessels in this class, reflecting Singapore’s robust capability to design, build, and maintain sophisticated naval warships locally. Shanmugam credited this capacity to decades of sustained investment in the nation’s defense industry. The Defense Science and Technology Agency also pointed out that the project involves complex systems integration, including the management of power, cooling, and mission module requirements, further highlighting the technological prowess involved in this endeavor.
Lieutenant-Colonel Timothy Low, a seasoned navy officer with 19 years of service and former commander of the missile corvette RSS Vigilance, has been appointed as the commanding officer of the Valour. Expressing his vision for the ship, Low emphasized his commitment to fostering a pioneering spirit among his crew, aiming to shape the future trajectory of the Republic of Singapore Navy through innovation and dedication.
