Taiwan Seeks Tech-Driven Maritime Talks with Japan, Philippines for Rights Protection

Taiwan has urged Japan and the Philippines to ensure that their discussions on maritime boundaries and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) respect Taiwan’s rights and interests in the surrounding waters. This appeal comes on the heels of Japan and the Philippines announcing plans to negotiate maritime boundaries and continental shelf claims in accordance with international law. Experts have observed that these proposed zones may intersect with areas Taiwan claims.

Taiwanese officials have received assurances from both Japan and the Philippines that any future agreements will not be legally binding on third parties and will adhere to established international legal principles. Taiwan’s government emphasized its commitment to engaging with both nations to protect its maritime interests, which include fishing rights and resource access in the region. Existing agreements with Japan and the Philippines are still valid, according to Taiwanese authorities.

The situation arises amidst broader regional tensions, particularly after China asserted claims over waters east of Taiwan and conducted coast guard patrols in the area. Taiwan has rejected these claims, maintaining its stance on sovereignty and maritime jurisdiction.

Philippine officials have indicated that formal negotiations have not yet begun, emphasizing that it is premature to predict the potential impacts of any future agreements on fishing rights or territorial claims. This cautious approach aims to ensure that ongoing diplomatic efforts do not inadvertently affect the interests of neighboring countries, especially Taiwan.
