Tharman: Singapore, Malaysia Should Boost Tech Collaboration Amidst Differences

Singapore’s President, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, has underscored the importance of continued collaboration between Singapore and Malaysia, despite occasional disagreements. Highlighting the foundation of mutual respect and understanding that has supported bilateral relations for over sixty years, President Tharman emphasized the need to strengthen their partnership.

In anticipation of his upcoming four-day state visit to Malaysia, President Tharman noted that both nations have consistently opted for dialogue, mutual respect, and adherence to international law when addressing sensitive issues, choosing not to let these disputes interfere with broader cooperation. This approach has allowed the two countries to focus on significant areas of collaboration.

Economic integration, renewable energy, talent development, and cross-border infrastructure projects are key areas where Singapore and Malaysia are deepening their collaboration. Notable projects include the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone and the RTS Link, which are set to enhance connectivity and economic ties between the two neighbors.

President Tharman also highlighted the critical role of deeper integration within ASEAN and the need to uphold a rules-based international order. These efforts, he suggested, are essential for promoting peace and stability across the region, which is crucial in today’s increasingly unpredictable global landscape.

The Singaporean leader asserted that sustained engagement among leaders, businesses, and the public is vital for building long-term trust. This continued engagement ensures that both nations remain dependable partners, committed to navigating the complexities of the modern world together.
